Facial Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery

Meeting the Challenges of Facial Trauma Reconstruction

Facial trauma entails an extraordinary level of technical complexity and the stakes for the patient could hardly be higher. Aside from the vital need to restore the patient’s personal appearance, breathing, speech, and swallowing can also be directly affected, depending on the location of the injury. The fact is, facial trauma reconstruction is one of the most difficult tasks for head and neck surgeons, and only the most highly-trained experts attempt extensive reconstruction procedures. Dr. Mourad is trained in all aspects of facial reconstruction ranging from maxillofacial reconstruction to auto-transplantation and microvascular repairs.

Because of Dr. Mourad’s comprehensive experience and intensive training, he is often asked to get involved in some of New York’s most challenging facial trauma cases. He believes that it’s his duty to make sure that the results not only restore the greatest level of functionality but that the patient comes away with a natural-looking, harmonious appearance that lasts for many, many years.

There are many types of facial trauma. Because of their central location on the face, the nose, cheekbones and eye sockets are frequently involved in accidents and other facial injuries. This means that complex bony and soft tissue injuries have occurred and those will require a prompt and accurate diagnosis to ensure proper treatment. Dr. Mourad has the expertise to make a detailed diagnosis and deftly perform primary reconstructive surgery as soon as possible after the trauma, and on an emergency basis when needed.

Facial Trauma Reconstruction Surgery

To rebuild facial features, Dr. Mourad may use tissues from your body with a microvascular free tissue transfer, or “free flap,” during which the surgeon takes skin, bone or muscle from one part of your body to reconstruct new facial features. When this approach is not possible, implants and prosthetic devices can help restore natural-looking contours and features. Depending on your needs, your procedure may take place in the surgeon’s office, a surgical facility, an outpatient surgery center or a hospital. Dr. Mourad will create a highly personalized treatment plan that may include other surgeries.

Facial Trauma Reconstruction Aftercare

Recovering from facial reconstruction surgery varies from person to person, and depends on the extent of underlying damage, your general health, and other factors, including careful attention to postoperative instructions. Dr. Mourad and his staff focus on your health and well-being and will support your experience with knowledgeable care, clear communication and compassion. Dr. Mourad also often provides secondary repairs in people who had facial trauma in prior years, or previously had surgery that did not produce optimal results.
